I am very grateful to the subscribers who have financially supported me, however, with the expenses incurred and the hours involved in research, analysis, preparation, drafting and presenting this material - I do not break even. I’m often asked something like ‘well, this analysis is all very interesting but what are you going to DO?!’ As if I am funded and operating from a resourced organization/institution/company. One woman alone can DO nothing if she is not resourced and operationalized to DO something other than that which she can do alone, with no income, no working base, no network of affiliation, no access to institutional resources, no infrastructure…..etc. And yet, those sitting comfortably in those paid positions, with the income to support their families, health benefits, pipelines to publication, promotion etc - they can access this work which I am not paid for and use it - because - The Marketplace and Institutional Gatekeeping. I now have over 900 subscribers on here. If they all became even just the lowest tier paid subs then this work would provide an income for my family. At present - I don’t break even. If my current subscribers see no value in my content I’d much rather they unsubscribed altogether, leaving those who do gain value from it (if they have the means) to subscribe at the lowest paid tier. In cases of hardship I’m perfectly willing to offer complimentary subscription and have already done so to individuals who’ve messaged me privately. Other authors on this platform have also done the same for me because I don’t break even, I can’t afford to financially support authors and analysts whose work I consider highly valuable. Do you see how this downward spiral of exclusion works? You can not even imagine the weight of facing another approaching New Year with this work not being able to financially support my 4 children and help relieve the burden on my husband’s shoulders in the current economy, following the fall out of both of us loosing our incomes and his business post Lockdown etc. I don’t write about personal troubles on social media but when work of the kind I’ve been doing is not even valued sufficiently to be generating an income, what does that say? How is anyone else supposed to be encouraged to work in this Field when it remains economically unviable? And readers will pay monthly subs no problem for entertainment and creative expression - but not for diagnostics, analysis and charting the restoration of the civic immune system. That’s Huxley’s World for sure. I’d dearly love to give my husband and my children the gift this Christmas of reassuring them that Mom’s work is at long last (now 4 yrs in) now going to bring benefit to THEM in how Mom is able to contribute to the family needs. NEEDS not even wants! Why is that so much to ask after everything that has been given.
